It, however, reinforces the idea that the poem is more a meditation on decisions taken and how the individual undergoes it. Frost has commented that the poem ‘came less from me than from him.’ Frost explains that Thomas has always been careful when he has to make a decision, weighing things up for a long time before choosing what he would do. Edward Thomas had been declared, and Edward Thomas first felt that he would join up straight away, but then thought that perhaps he should wait a little while. The possibility of talking about it eons later becomes THE concern.įrost’s own story of how The Road Not Taken was inspired and its essence, is that in 1914, he was with Elinor, Edward Thomas and Thomas’ wife Helen met and were talking. However, when he was writing the poem, Frost was altogether casual about the choice his persona is making. What shatters him living the decision and reflecting on the alternative. The poem’s verse-form that is nine-syllable lines, rhyming abaab, contrasts with its apparently use of words implying such easiness: perhaps the better claim (7), really about the same (10), I doubted if I should ever come back (15). Some, like William H Pritchard in his critical review Frost: A literary Life Reconsidered, have gone to the extent of remarking that Frost does not care about which road he has chosen. The poem gives an ovation to those who have the audacity of making less conventional decisions, yet also forces the individual to acknowledge that one will have to go on living with the consequences of one’s choices: Hence the speaker heads for individuality, instead of following the crowd. Therefore, both roads are the same, with the only difference that the chosen one is the less travelled one. Yet, from a general perspective, both roads look the same, The persona is more comfortable going where none goes. The title of the poem suggests alternative not taken by the speaker. Though many interprete the poem as encouraging the individual to go his way without so much being bothered about others, the audience will also digest the series of contradictions emanating from the context. Though the poem is quite simple on the surface, it triggers the audience to consider how life-decisions can be both uplifting and disarming. The Road Not Taken is a suggestive poem, which drives the audience to consider how nature can inspire one to probe existential issues.
